Change Equals Growth for Interior Designers

Hello Everyone! I have to apologize that I haven't written in a few weeks. We have been incredibly busy preparing for the Interior Design Summit, I took my NCIDQ and became a new mother to an 8 week old Basset Hound puppy. So needless to say, my plate has been full!

As I mentioned, we have been super busy preparing for our upcoming event that is taking place October 28 - 30, 2008. If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, visit www.InteriorDesignSummit.com. We are so excited to share this wealth of information with you! Gail and I also did our first U-Stream video today about what the Interior Design Summit has to offer. If you would like to watch it, visit http://www.ustream.tv/channel/interior-design-summit-preview-show

Making change. Change is all around us, from the leaves changing color in the Fall to learning how to work with a new client.

In the past couple of week's, I have had to do many things that make me uncomfortable or that I don't like to do. Taking a national exam is not on my "fun list". Even today when we were filming our U=Stream video, it was nerving to think that within seconds, my conversation (and face) would be plastered all over the internet.

Instead of sitting around and complaining about change, I just buckle down and work through it. You might ask why. Well, because we need change to grow. When I find myself getting frustrated with something that makes me feel uncomfortable, I push through. When I  am just about ready to give up, I push through. The reason I do this, is that I know that just at that very moment of frustration, I am on the verge of having a major breakthrough that will make me a stronger, wiser, and more successful person.

As designers, we deal with change everyday. From designing the changes for an interior to counseling the client that is dealing with changes to their personal space. I don't know one designer that hasn't had to do some type of emergency problem solving. I encourage you to make change in your business and in your life. Push through the hard times and stay positive.

"Growth itself contains the germ of happiness." ~Pearl S. Buck

Change

Erin, I love that quote by Pearl Buck. Many years ago at a volunteer training, the trainer used the phrase "without change there is no growth". I often recall the phrase which seems very applicable in these times as new solutions for ID practice and designers are called for.

Good luck on the exam. I applaud you for taking it!

Best, F
